Terugblik summerschool InFo-TED Academy

Van 9 tot 14 juni kwamen lerarenopleiders uit 12 landen bij elkaar in Nijmegen voor de inFo-TED summerschool. Lerarenopleiders Lidewij van Katwijk, Bruno Oldeboom en Michelle McDonnell waren erbij en blikken terug op een inspirerende week.

Day 1 –  We had a great kick off of the InFo-TED Academy 2025 in Nijmegen! Teacher educators from 12 different countries gathered at HAN university of applied sciences. @Bruno Oldeboom led several get-to-know-you games, which allowed us to talk about our contexts and experiences as a teacher educator. The keynote of @Paulien Meijer showed us the importance of development of autonomy as well as sense of belonging in the development of teacher educators’ professional identity. In this week we are working in a collaborative learning zone – with cultural differences. We drew and shared our storylines as TE’s . We split up in working groups to have a brainstorm about possible projects focused on TE professional development. At the end of the day some pre-service history teachers gave us a historical tour through Nijmegen.

Day 2 – A keynote by Geert Kelchtermans: Unpacking the layer cake of professionalizing teacher educators.

Day 3 – This day was fully packed – and inspiring! We started the morning working in our peer groups. All participants are divided into five small groups, each supported by a facilitator. Together with Lidewij van Katwijk, Michelle was co-facilitating a group with colleagues from England, Romania, Norway and Austria. Our group is developing a series of blog posts and a podcast on the professional development of teacher educators – great conversations and promising ideas are emerging!

In the afternoon, we went on school visits. Participants could choose between three inspiring schools: Montessori College in Groesbeek, Kandinsky College or Het Talent, a primary school in Lent. Each school welcomed us warmly and offered a thoughtful and engaging tour. I joined the group that visited Het Talent – and had the honour of being the tour guide! At the school, we were shown around by four pupils who spoke fluent English (😯). Truly impressive!

We ended the day with workshops on a variety of topics – including “AI in education”, a session by Helma Oolbekkink about “Designing Powerful Induction Programs for Early-Career Teachers”, and a workshop on modelling and voice-over teaching. A rich day full of learning and exchange!

Day 4 – A keynote by Miranda Timmermans & Liz White about: School- and institute-based teacher educators: from collaboration to synergy.

Day 5 – This last day of our intense week, we participated in a good interactive session about equity and diversity in teacher educators’ professional development by Lieke Jager. After this every working group presented their journey of the week, the intermediate results, and plans for the next month’s. I was really impressed! The groups are working on:

• A tool for better understanding oneself as a TE and talk about that with colleagues- using drawings
• A creative capsule with five lenses for investigating TE identity
• A tool to construct The T-bridge between university and school-based TE
• The Diamond 9: perspectives on the roles and work of TE’s
• Podcasts and stories about the exploration of TE transition across countries

Wat ons bijblijft

Lidewij van Katwijk: ‘Terugblikkend op de week kom ik tot de conclusie dat ik de week als zeer waardevol heb ervaren door de combinatie van de volgende aspecten:

• verschillende perspectieven, uit 12 landen met eigen cultuur en TE-traditie

• interessante passende keynotes

• keuze aan activerende en inspirerende workshops

• bijzondere schoolbezoeken

• een aantrekkelijk en passend zij-programma waarin studenten betrokken waren

• voldoende tijd om in de werkgroepen tot iets te komen
• een vervolg in het vooruitzicht.

Persoonlijk hebben we allemaal een of meerdere stappen gezet in onze ontwikkeling als lerarenopleider.’

Bruno Oldeboom: ‘Ik neem heel veel mee uit deze week, want:

1. Mijn professionele netwerk groeide door de academy;
2. Mijn kennisbasis is vergroot en ik heb andere invalshoeken gekregen op bestaande kennis;
3. Ik heb interessante aanwijzingen ontvangen over het inrichten van bijeenkomsten met aanstaande leraren en/of lerarenopleiders;
4. En mijn professionele identiteit heeft een confidence boost gekregen.’

Michelle McDonnell: ‘Wat mij persoonlijk het meest opviel, was dat we niet alleen gingen halen als deelnemers, maar samen iets nieuws gingen creëren. Ik ging helemaal aan en bruiste van de energie 😁. Ik vond mijn academiegenoten net zo inspirerend als de keynotes en facilitators! Het waren ook de kleine dingen, de persoonlijke gesprekken, de bevestiging die je kreeg van iemand uit een hele andere context, of de kennis van iemand vanuit een ander land of andere discipline ……

Het internationale perspectief heeft me ook echt verrast. Ik realiseerde me hoe ver wij in Nederland zijn gevorderd in het beschrijven van de beroepsbeelden en hoe goed we nu al samenwerken tussen instituten en scholen. Natuurlijk willen we het nog beter doen en soms anders aanpakken, maar het was/is prachtig om te zien wat we al met elkaar hebben bereikt in het samen opleiden.’
